New Year, New You | How to Set Resolutions Mindfully

December 30, 2018

2018 is coming to an end. We all know what that means...

New Year's Resolutions are upon us!

I can almost hear the assortment of cheers and groans that tend to accompany this realization. For some, the new year represents a time of evolution, where they can shed their old skin and step out into the world with a fresh, clean slate. For others, it's just another Tuesday.

I've been both of those people at one point or another, and I can tell you that each point of view is valid. Much like any other day of the year, the very first day adopts whatever meaning we give to it. However we decide to show up on any given day is exactly what we should expect to receive in return. This means that our New Year's Resolutions are only as powerful as we believe them to be. If we set them with the belief that they are impossible to achieve or attain, we've already lost.

The biggest mistake that many of us make when setting yearly resolutions is attacking a long-term goal with a short-term plan. More often than not, we tend to overestimate what can be done in a single year, and UNDERestimate what we can accomplish in the present moment. We believe there's never enough time in a day, but we somehow have the WHOLE YEAR to get things done. Because of this, we set yearly goals that are so outlandish we end up giving up before the second month has seen its end.

So, how does someone set challenging resolutions without spreading themselves so thin that they eventually give up? I've got two simple steps that just might do the trick.

Number 1) WRITE IT DOWN

Our brains have a much easier time processing and retaining information when it is written down in our own handwriting.

The same principle applies when setting goals.

When a resolution, goal, or aspiration is presented in writing, it becomes tangible. Our brain goes, “Oh, you want me to do THAT? I see it now...” Additionally, having a written goal means you will get to witness yourself attaining success, which automatically sends a rush of dopamine throughout the brain and triggers a sense of reward in the body.

Once it has a taste of the sensation of achievement, your brain will continue seeking new ways to check more boxes and accomplish more goals.

Number 2) BITE SIZED PIECES

No, not literally.

If, for example, getting in shape is one of your resolutions for 2019, an ideal place to start would be to identify exactly what “in shape” actually means to you. Is it a number? A waistband? A mirror's reflection? A physical sensation? By determining your definition of fitness, you will have a much easier time recognizing and tracking your progress as the year goes on.

Once you've set your ultimate fitness goal for the year, it's time for the scary part: taking the first step. This is where your bite-sized pieces really come into play. Rather than gazing longingly at the number or image you've set as your yearly aspiration, and hoping it will somehow transform your mind and body for you, perhaps you now set the goal of going to the gym once a week. That's it; just once a week. Or, maybe you decide to take up a new sport or physical activity...

See where I'm going with this?

Resolutions are only daunting to us because we get so focused on the finish line that we freeze in the middle of the road.

In 2019, let's make a vow to show up for ourselves and live in alignment with our highest potential.

From all of us at Mountain Yoga Studio, have a safe and happy new year!
